Module 1.9

Guided Challenge #1

Using the techniques we have discussed, let's apply our knowledge from this module to create a LinkedIn bio.

The Task

Create a compelling LinkedIn bio using prompt engineering techniques. Your bio should tell your professional story effectively while highlighting your key strengths and experiences. Before you begin, you should be thinking about your professional narrative, key achievements you want to highlight, and the impression you want to make.

You are welcome to use whichever LLM model that you prefer - the big three are linked on this page. Additionally, there is no single correct solution to this task - the important part of this exercise is to practice with the AI. While you are having this conversation, think about things like:

  • Did you establish clear purpose for your bio?
  • How effectively did you communicate your context?
  • Were your requirements specific and clear?
  • Did your format choices support your goals?
  • How did you use the AI's questions to improve the result?

Comparing the AI's responses with your internal vision is the key to success. If you find yourself stuck, or need hints, take advantage of the information below! Are you ready to test your prompt engineering skills?

  • Target audience (who you want to reach)

Have you shared any examples?

Consider the following:

  • Have you seen a bio that you like or that works?
  • What about a specific bio do you find impactful?
  • Are there any examples of what you dislike?
  • Did you explain the example or did you share it verbatim?
Remember: the more information you share with the AI, the better it will be able to respond to your request! Consider sharing as much relevant information as you can, while contextualizing it. This information can help craft a bio that is uniquely yours!

AI: What can I help with?
You: I need help writing a LinkedIn bio. Could you act as a personal branding expert with experience in professional social media profiles?

AI: I'll help you as a personal branding expert. To create an effective LinkedIn bio, I need to understand:

  1. What stage are you at in your career?
  2. What's the primary goal for your LinkedIn profile?
  3. Who is your target audience?

You: Thank you for the questions - answers below:

  1. I'm a mid-level software developer with 5 years of experience
  2. I'm looking to position myself as a cloud computing specialist, targeting companies that work with AWS.
  3. My goal is to connect with potential employers and other cloud professionals.

AI: Thank you for that background. Before we draft the bio, let me confirm a few things about format and content:

  1. Would you prefer a narrative style or a more achievement-focused format?
  2. Do you have any specific achievements or metrics you'd like to highlight?
  3. Are there particular cloud certifications or projects we should mention?

You: Sounds good:

  1. I'd like a mix of narrative and achievements.
  2. I recently led two major cloud migration projects - one reduced costs by 30% and another improved system performance by 40%.
  3. I have three AWS certifications (Solutions Architect, Developer, and SysOps Administrator).

For added context, I prefer a professional but approachable tone.

AI: Excellent details. Let me draft an initial version of your bio:

"Cloud computing specialist with 5 years of software development experience, passionate about building scalable, cost-effective AWS solutions. AWS-certified Solutions Architect, Developer, and SysOps Administrator with a proven track record of successful cloud implementations.

Recently led two major cloud migration projects, achieving 30% cost reduction and 40% performance improvement through innovative AWS architecture design and implementation. Combining technical expertise with strategic thinking to help organizations leverage the full potential of cloud computing.

Interested in connecting with forward-thinking organizations and fellow cloud enthusiasts to explore new challenges in cloud architecture and development."

How does this initial draft align with your goals? Would you like to adjust any aspects?

You: This is a good start, but could we:

  • Add something about collaboration and team leadership?
  • Include more specific AWS services I work with?
  • Make it slightly more conversational?
AI: Here's a revised version incorporating those elements:

"Hey there! I'm a cloud computing specialist who loves turning complex AWS challenges into elegant solutions. With 5 years of hands-on development experience and three AWS certifications (Solutions Architect, Developer, and SysOps Administrator), I speak fluent cloud – from EC2 and Lambda to ECS and CloudFormation.

Leading cross-functional teams is my sweet spot. I recently guided two successful cloud migration projects, where my team achieved a 30% cost reduction through strategic use of AWS auto-scaling and spot instances, while another project delivered 40% performance improvements by implementing serverless architecture and optimizing our CloudFront distribution.

I thrive on collaboration and believe the best cloud solutions come from combining diverse perspectives. Currently looking to connect with innovative organizations and fellow cloud enthusiasts who are pushing the boundaries of what's possible with AWS.

Let's talk cloud strategy! Open to discussing new opportunities in cloud architecture and development."

How's this version? We can adjust the tone or technical details further if needed.

You: That's much better! Could we make one final adjustment to include something about staying current with cloud technologies?
AI: Here's the final version:

Constantly exploring new AWS services and keeping up with the rapidly evolving cloud landscape through continuous learning and experimentation.

Currently looking to connect with innovative organizations and fellow cloud enthusiasts who are pushing the boundaries of what's possible with AWS. Let's talk cloud strategy! Open to discussing new opportunities in cloud architecture and development."

You: Perfect! This captures everything I wanted to convey. Thank you!
AI: You're most welcome! Best of luck with updating your LinkedIn bio. Let me know if there's anything else I can do to help you.
